An increasing proportion of the Māori health workforce have a strong foundation in te reo me ōna tikanga and mātauranga Māori are being employed in health services. There is a greater prevalence of complex health and social issues which require a holistic, culturally led, and ongoing set of interventions which can only be provided by a skilled Māori multi-disciplinary workforce, able to sustain effective long-term relationships and links with other providers.
Māori models of practice and mātauranga Māori are integral, whilst cognisant of the levels of health and social needs that workforces and providers are addressing. More will be needed to increase and build the workforce capacity to grow the range of Kaupapa Māori options across the continuum of healthcare (e.g., primary care, whānau ora, secondary care).
Accelerating the spread of kaupapa Māori and whānau-centred services is an investment in wellness, wellbeing and preventing longer-term health inequities. Integrated holistic approaches place the needs of Māori and their whānau at the centre of quality health and disability services.
